Hot Springs is a quaint little town surrounded by beautiful mountains. It's a relaxing spot to visit and makes a good one-day or weekend getaway.

From Asheville, take 19/23 north and exit at Weaverville, route 25/70. Head west on 25/70 through some winding country with beautiful views of the mountains. Turn left (west) on route 25/70 as route 208 heads north. At this turn, you're not far from the Hot Springs community. You'll note as you enter the tiny town that the hot springs are located on your right.

There are a number of hiking trails available in the area and the Appalachian Trail passes right through the town. Here's a suggestion that has some variation to it:

The Lover's Leap Area has 3 trails of variable length: Pump Gap, Lover's Leap and the Appalachian Trail. These trails are accessed by the Silvermine Trailhead just minutes from Main Street in Hot Springs. A map of the three routes is displayed at the trailheaad. Hikers may select from several combinations of trails to enjoy hikes of different length, difficulty and scenery.

If you're wanting to mountain bike, keep in mind that biking is not permitted on the Appalachian Trail or any other trails in this area except for the Mill Ridge Mountain Bike Trail. Mill Ridge Trail is located just off highway 25/70 about 2 miles east of Hot Springs. It begins on Forest Service Road 113, then descends along an old road to connect with the Forest Service Road 113A, which loops back to Road 113. This is a moderately difficult trail and has some good views of the surrounding Laurel River Gorge and Rich Mountain area.

After your bike or hike, be sure to stop for a soak at the hot springs. It's always a good idea to make reservations, especially during peak seasons and on weekends. You can reach them at (828) 622-7676.

Tent and trailer camping is available just across the road from the hot springs, so if you'd rather stay the night than drive back to Asheville, this is a good option.
