Winter Storm Blankets WNC With Two to Seven Inches of Snow. Ski Resorts Are Opening.

An early winter storm blanketed WNC and Upstate South Carolina with two to seven inches of snow on Sunday, November 19, 2000. The snow began falling early Sunday morning and continued until mid-Sunday afternoon. The snowfall is being followed by an artic blast of cold weather that will usher in temperatures in the mid to low teens by Wednesday, November 22, 2000.

Snow skiers welcomed the early winter snowstorm, and Sugar Mountain Ski resort, located in Banner Elk, NC, opened its slopes to skiers on Friday, November 17, 2000. The WNC mountains have been experiencing unseasonably cold temperatures over the past week, and the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort was able to manufacture snow at night during the freezing temperatures. Initially, Sugar Mountain opened with two ski runs with a ten-inch base, but with the additional snowfall on Sunday, Sugar Mountain was able to open additional ski runs.

Other area ski resorts also plan to open this week. The ski resorts and their opening dates are as follows:

So, if you have some time off during the holidays, grab your skis and hit the slopes. It's not every holiday season in the WNC Mountains that the ski resorts are open this early.
