High Visibility Crosswalk Installed on Hwy. 64 and Valley St.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently installed a high visibility crosswalk and high visibility school crossing signs on Highway 64 and Valley Street in downtown Hendersonville.

This will assist children in that area walking to and from school.

NCDOT funded the project and installed the crosswalk along with the signs while the City of Hendersonville installed an accessible ramp in the sidewalk. Tom Wooten, Director of Public Works, said in a statement: “The City of Hendersonville would like to thank the NCDOT for working with the City to help the children in this community. There are future plans to look at other areas including another crosswalk at Highway 64 and Oak Street.”

High visibility crosswalks typically make use of longitudinal or “continental,” or “ladder” style pavement markings, which are highly visible to approaching traffic. Typically, crosswalks installations should be done in conjunction with other enhancements that physically reinforce the crosswalks and reduce vehicle speeds.
