Kindergarten Readiness Rally Set for March 16th

Coming up in April is kindergarten registration for children turning 5 on or before Aug. 31st, and Henderson County Public Schools is co-hosting the annual Kindergarten Readiness Rally on March 16th.

The rally’s goal is to get parents and students on track for the start of the new school year.

Sponsored by Western Carolina Community Action, Smart Start of Henderson County, the Children & Family Resource Center and HCPS, the Kindergarten Readiness Rally will give parents the opportunity to confirm their designated school district, learn which documents to bring to registration, and meet their children’s teachers and administrators.

While the parents learn about registration, children can participate in fun learning activities parents can replicate at home to support school readiness. More than 25 local nonprofit organizations that work with children and families will host activities or provide free give-aways, including Flat Rock Playhouse, United Way, El Centro, the Hands On! children’s museum, and the Mineral & Lapidary Museum.

An HCPS school bus will also be on site to introduce the children to school bus safety and to ease any anxieties they – or their parents – might have about riding the bus to school come August. And every kindergartner who attends can take a book home, choosing from including old favorites like, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear,” “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” and “Curious George” and newer books, like the “Molly Lou Melon” series.

Parents with a student already enrolled in school can still benefit from attending the Rally by meeting their kindergartener’s future teachers and administrators, and by asking any questions about the kindergarten program at HCPS.

The Rally will take place from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 16, at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville.
