Kim Morgan has managed to snag a few purple blouses and a sparkly purple iPhone case during her first three days at Dana Elementary, but the new principal says she has some serious shopping to do in order to show off her Wildcat pride.
“I’ve got to figure out how to get more purple in my wardrobe,” Morgan said on her first Wildcat Wednesday – a day each week on which students and staff wear purple.
Wednesday, July 29, was Morgan’s third day as Dana’s new principal, and she said she’s launching herself into the new school year. Having most recently served as assistant principal at Flat Rock Middle, Morgan said it’s been interesting memorizing an elementary school schedule where time is measured in five-minute increments instead of in one-hour periods.
It’s a throwback to Morgan’s first teaching job in 1991 at Mills River Elementary, where she was an interim teacher after earning her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Gardner Webb University. Her first full time teaching position was at Flat Rock Middle, where she taught math and science for seven years.
Morgan took a six-year break from teaching at Henderson County Public Schools to raise her son, after which she taught part time at East Henderson High for a year. From there, she returned to teaching math and science at Flat Rock Middle for another five years. Morgan served three years as an Instructional Coach before becoming assistant principal at Flat Rock Middle in 2013.
She also holds a graduate degree in administration and leadership from Gardner Webb University.
Morgan said she’s excited to continue the amazing programs already in place at Dana, and is looking to learn how to be a Wildcat from the administration and teachers this year.
“They are nothing but supportive,” Morgan said. “My goal this year is to really learn from them, be their advocate, and support them.”
“I feel privileged to be here,” she added. “This is going to be so much fun.”
