Information
The P20 Council is a body tasked with leading the four-county region of Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, and Transylvania to meet educational attainment goals. This local effort underpins the statewide myFutureNC institution, whose goal is to close the educational attainment gap that leads to gainful employment for the state by increasing the total number of North Carolinians with valued post-secondary credentials to 2 million by the year 2030. If the current level of attainment rates remains constant over the upcoming 10-year period, forecasts show an estimated shortfall of 400,000 individuals with credentials from goal achievement.
The Land of Sky region is planning to contribute an estimated 82,000 individuals to this goal. Carolina Demography projects that this region is on track to reach 72,000 individuals with postsecondary credentials at its current attainment level; this comes out to a goal deficit of about 10,000 individuals.
This work is guided by four strategic directions from Pre-K to Post-Grad as we strive to prepare the workforce of today and tomorrow for sustainable-wage careers.
The John M. Belk Endowment has made it possible for the Land of Sky to advance this important work.
As the P20 Council launches, they have opened a grant opportunity to organizations that can address any of the four strategic directions identified as necessary to the mission of the P20 Council. Organizations such as school systems, non-profits, and others can apply for up to $12,500 in grant funding from the P20 Council.
These strategic directions are:
Strategic Direction #1
Enhance Pre-K and Early Childhood Education programs’ enrollment.
Strategic Goal
Increase enrollment of eligible children to 75% in each project county.
Strategic Direction #2
Improve student success rates in K-12 education.
Strategic Goal
Increase graduation rate to 95% in the project counties.
Strategic Direction #3
Create a seamless transition to postsecondary education.
Strategic Goal
Improve postsecondary enrollment success to 65 % in the project counties.
Strategic Direction #4
Align educational objectives and outcomes to desired employee competencies.
Strategic Goal
Ensure that 90% of North Carolina adults ages 25-44 in the labor force obtain the necessary credentials that align with needed employees’ competencies.
