Unique Summer Camps Offered for Area Youth


Part of the summer fun � as seen through the eyes of a kid � is getting out of the daily routine by attending some sort of camp. For those kids who have a particular talent or interest � or are looking for a traditional summer camp experience � a number of terrific day camps are available locally, but early sign-up is a must.

Henderson County Girl Scouts is hosting their annual Summer Day Camp at the Historic Johnson Farm. Camp will be held Monday, June 7, through Friday, June 11, 2004, at the Farm, located on Highway 191. The Henderson County Girl Scout Service Unit is sponsoring the camp. The five-day event will have themes focusing on Girl Scouting Around the World, and each day will include information and sessions centered on the four world centers for girl scouting and the Edith Macy Center in New York. A majority of the activities will focus on international travel and destinations, cultures, friendships, and girl scouting around the world. Summer Day Camp is open to all registered Henderson County Girl Scouts, Daisy through Junior age level. Cadette, Senior, and Adult Scouts are invited to participate as camp counselors and assistants during the event. The Town of Fletcher is once again hosting their Fletcher Summer Day Camp. The camp is a seven-week, traditional day camp with games, activities, and field trips planned for a summer of fun. Camp dates are June 7 � July 30, with no camp the week following July 4. Parents can register their children Monday through Friday from 8 AM � 5 PM at Fletcher Town Hall until May 14. Smith-McDowell House Museum in Asheville will host Hands-On-History Summer Camp, a fun, history-oriented day camp for 2nd- through 5th-graders on the grounds of Asheville�s oldest surviving home, a restored circa 1840 mansion, from July 12 � 16, 2004. The camp will meet from 9 AM � 1 PM, Monday through Friday. Students will make heritage crafts, play period games, make homemade ice cream, handle historic objects, explore historic sculptures, and more. Daily themes include archaeology, architecture, the Civil War, and Victorian times. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. The cost is $65 for Museum members, and $80 for non-members.
