Western Carolina University, in collaboration with Pardee
Hospital, will offer an in-depth educational workshop in the Great Life Series, �Allergies Across
the Lifespan.� The program will be held at the Pardee Health Education Center at the Blue Ridge
Mall in Hendersonville on Tuesday, April 1 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.
Leon Elliston, M.D., a board certified allergist with Regional Allergy Consultants of
Asheville and Hendersonville, and Western�s Assistant Professor of Nursing Betty Gwen
Carlton, F.N.P., will share information about the causes of allergies, symptoms, diagnosis and
treatment in aging adults. By explaining what is normal as one ages and what is not, they will
offer guidance on when those who suffer symptoms suggesting allergies should explore medical
help. They will also suggest ways that people can avoid potentially life threatening allergic
reactions. A question and answer period will follow the presentation.Along with Western Carolina University and Pardee Hospital, the Great Life Series is sponsored by First Citizen�s Bank of Henderson County, the Spring Arbors of Hendersonville, Chef Starr, Food to Go and Home Helpers. The series, along with Western�s academic program in gerontology, was recognized in 2004 as a �Geriatric Best Practice� by the Duke Endowment funded research of the Sage Institute. Registration is available to adults of all ages at the Pardee Health Education Center at the Blue Ridge Mall or by mail to W.C.U.
